The club and its members know every nook, cranny and back alley of our wonderful local area, and further afield too. We are surrounded by great places to visit or just ride through beautiful countryside. Most of our routes are easily categorised into our club run coffee classes... there is something for everyone, whatever your ability or level of fitness. 

Our routes are available from Ride with GPS - from there you can download the route for use on a gps device or your phone, or get old-school printed cue sheets and maps.

3 Peaks back via Peasemore

A route taking in the 3 peaks around Pangbourne and Streatley. Heading out on fast riding roads towards Bradfield the route first takes in deceptively tricky short but steep Sulham Hill. The route carrys on to Pangbourne and up Whitchurch Hill to Crays pond before the fun descent into Goring. Next up is the main event Streatley the 1km climb averages 12% and maxes out at 25%. The remainder of the route is undulating back into Newbury.

3 Peaks plus Buckham bonus

A route taking in the 3 peaks around Pangbourne and Streatley plus the bonus climb of Buckham Hill. Heading out on fast riding roads towards Bradfield the route first takes in deceptively tricky short but steep Sulham Hill. The route carrys on to Pangbourne and up Whitchurch Hill to Crays pond before the fun descent into Goring. Next up is the main event Streatley the 1km climb averages 12% and maxes out at 25%. The remainder of the route is undulating until it reaches Buckham Hill before the (mostly) downhill run back into Newbury.

3 Peaks Standard

A route taking in the 3 peaks around Pangbourne and Streatley. Heading out on fast riding roads towards Bradfield the route first takes in deceptively tricky short but steep Sulham Hill. The route carrys on to Pangbourne and up Whitchurch Hill to Crays pond before the fun descent into Goring. Next up is the main event Streatley the 1km climb averages 12% and maxes out at 25%. Its then back to Newbury on the B4009 (net downhill).

Alton Barnes

The route is lumpy out towards Pewsey and Alton Barnes, where you can spot one of the many chalk White Horses in the area. It's then up and over Pewsey Down before a a long descent towards Marlborough. From Marlborough it's fairly flat back into Newbury with only White Hill before Ramsbury being the only notable ascent.

Ashbury - Ramsbury

A route sticking to relative main roads, mainly flat with a few shorter climbs. It's straight out on the valley road gradually climbing all the way to the top of Ashbury it's them a steep descent into Ashbury. There is a bit of flat as the route turns towards Bishopstone before climbing back up over the ridegeway to Fox Hill. There are then two further climbs out of Aldbourne and little kick before Ramsbury. It's then flat and fast back to Newbury via Kintbury.

Ashmansworth - Upton - Kintbury

A hilly route starting out with a climb to Ashmansworth before dropping down and climbing up to Faccombe via some steep S bends. From there it's a fast flowing descent to Hurstbourne Tarrant before turning heading north up the upper portion of the picturesque Swift Valley. Continuing the climbing theme it's then up to Linkenholt and finally the south side of Coombe. The route descends again to Kintbury and it's then then a rolling road back into Newbury.

Boxford - Hampstead Norreys - Cold Ash

This lovely dirty chai ride heads straight out of town past Donnington Castle with its history and wonderful views. It then drops down into the picturesque village of Bagnor before heading through the stunning row of trees to Boxford. As we head out of Boxford over, under and over the motorway once more we begin to hit some great tracks that will test your skills if muddy. These take us close to Chieveley and Worlds End before hitting another great testing byway towards Hermitage. Here you pick up the tree lined old railway line to Hampstead Norreys which is a treat to ride. At Hampstead Norreys you head into and out of a few woods which really are good fun before heading back towards Newbury via Cold Ash and Ashmore Green. This route will give you a variety of off experiences and is sure to make you smile.

Bradfield

Roll out past Shaw House and after a short climb through Ashmore Green to the Ridge enjoy the gentle descent to Bradfield. Return via the Pang Valley and the villages of Bucklebury, Marlston & Hermitage.

Brimpton - Kingsclere

Escape from Newbury via the Thatcham ring-road and a short stretch on the A4 before hitting the smaller roads to Brimpton, Ashford Hill and Kingsclere. Return to Newbury via Ecchinswell and Penwood.

Brimpton - Kingsclere - Combe

A hilly route with the bigger-climbs towards the end of the route. A rolling first 35km passes through Brimpton, Kingsclere and Burghclere. The second half of the route then climbs Ashmansworth, Faccombe, Coombe via the South side and Walbury.

Bucklebury - Hermitage

A route that heads out of Newbury on the gradual climb of Stoney lane, it's the flat along the top of the ridge to Chapel Row before a drop down into Bucklebury. The route then proceeds up a 2nd gradual climb followed by a descent into Hermitage. It's then over to Curridge before heading back into Newbury.

Bucklebury Summer Velo Quest

Burghclere - Ibworth - Greenham

A longer route not overly technical route combining long off-road (gravel/tracks) and quiet road. Starting out from Greenham Common the route goes through Echinswell and Kingcslere where the route then takes an off-road climb up Plantation Hill. It then winds it's way to Upper Wooton before some long gravel sections over to Ladle Hill via Ashe Warren. Next up is a fun steep descent off Ladle Hill to Symington, it's then back to the wide open gravel paths of Greenham Common and returning to Newbury via the Kennet Canal Path.

Burghfield

A flat route crossing Greenham Common and going through the villages of Brimpton, Aldermaston and Grazeley Green. It's then flat onto Theale before climbing up to Chapel Row on the way back into Newbury

Catmore - West Ilsley - Farnborough

It’s worth a few moderate climbs for the views across the Downs from the Catmore to West Ilsley road and again on the climb from West Ilsley to Farnborough.

Chieveley - Brightwalton - Boxford

A route with a gentle climb out via Chievely to Stanmore before an equally gentle descent back to Boxford and back into Newbury via the Valley road. Save some legs for the little kick up to the Woodspeen pub.

Chute Causeway - Coombe (South side)

A hilly route that heads out to Shalbourne where the climbing begins with Rivar Hill, next up is Chute before dropping down the steep Conholt Hill descent, take at the bottom of this descent as it is immediately followed by a T-junction. After a short bit of flat it then bounces straight back up Linkenholt. The climbing for the day is rounded off on the south side of Coombe.

Compton - East Ilsley

A gently undulating route on quiet, good quality roads taking the Downland village of Compton and East Ilsley before returning via Peasemore, Hillgreen and Boxford.

Cotswold

A rewarding rolling route over to the scenic Cotswolds. The route climbs out of Berkshire towards Ashbury. After Fairford the passes through the pretty villages of Bibury, Coln St Denis and Northleach before turning down the Windrush Valley towards Burford. From Burford it's accross the flat Oxfordshire plain and then back into Berkshire over Chain Hill.

De ronde van Berkshire

An epic route that skirts the outline of Berkshire. Please note this route does not start from the Clock Tower but passes close by Newbury and so could be picked up from there.

Hayling Island

A long day out to the coast, Fish and Chips anyone? The route is an out and back. It's an undulating route with a couple of significant climbs; White Hill, Kingsclere and a climb up to Clanfield. From Clanfield its then a descent and flat run into the coast. The route then turns and head back the same way.

Hermitage-WorldsEnd-Brightwalton

A fairly flat route, it leaves Newbury via the quiet Winterbourne Valley road and winds it's way through the villages of Chievley, Hermitage, World's End, Peasemore and Brighwalton. It's then a gradual descent back into Newbury via Boxford.

Hungerford, West Isley & Bradfield

The route starts by heading to Hungerford via Kintbury. On leaving Hungerford the route climbs up to the top of Stag Hill via the Berkshire side. It then drops down to East Shefford and climbs gradually over 8km / 5 miles up to Farnborough onto the Isleys villages before reaching Compton where the route then climbs up Apple Pie Hill. The route winds its way back to Newbury via Bradfield, Bucklebury, Curridge and the Winterbourne valley.

Inkpen - Burbage - Vernham Dean

A rolling route with the steep climb of the south side of Coombe towards the end of the route. The route has a number of rolling climbs out to Great Bedwyn, it's then relatively flat to Tidcombe where the is another small climb to Oxenwood, from there it's down the fast but beautiful Swift Valley road as far as Vernham Dean. At Vernham Dean the route then climbs to Linkenholt followed by a short descent and then up the south side of Coombe where it is then pretty much downhill all the way home. 

Inkpen - Little Bedwyn - Wickham

A route of rolling climbs, nothing too steep. It heads out to Inkpen and then onto Hungerford where it picks up North Standen road, please be aware of a couple of sharp downhill turns, as it's a quiet road mainly used by farm vehicles the road surface is not the best in places and it can get quite gravelly in the winter. The route then follows the Kennet Canal to Little Bedwyn where it then turns back on itself. The route returns to Newbury via Chilton Foiliat and Wickham.

Kennet Valley Audax amended (Berkshire only)

This route is based on Cycling UK Reading's Kennet Valley 100km audax. Please note the route has been started from Grazeley, where the audax would usually start from but can be picked up close to Newbury.

Lambourn

Heading out to Lambourn via the valley road, there is one longer climb up to the B4000. It's then onto the quiet roads through Hungerford Newton, Kintbury and Marsh Benham. On the way back into Newbury there is a short but sharp climb past Stockcross.

Lambourn - Ramsbury - Inkpen

It's straight out to Lambourne via the valley road. There is the a long climb up to the B4000, from Baydon there is then a steep fast descent into Aldbourne where the route then climbs gradually. Once the descent to Ramsbury has been taken it's then around 10k (6.5miles) of flat. The route heads up Coombe via the steepest north side (20% max), after the descent from Coombe it then immediately bounces up Walbury.

Lambourn - Stitchcombe - Shalbourne

Straight out to Lambourn it's then the longest climb of the route up to the B4000. The remainder of the route then has 7 smaller climbs heading via Ramsbury, Stitchcombe, the Bedwyns, Ham, Inkpen and Hampstead Marshall.

Leckhampstead - West Ilsley - Ashampstead

The route leaves Newbury via Boxford then gradually climbing all the way to Farnborough where it heads towards East Isley, watch out for the little kicks leaving West Isley they are harder than they look on the profile!! At Compton it's then up Apple Pie Hill, 1.5km (1 mile) long steep at the bottom it then levels out after 1km. The route heads back to Newbury via Ashampsted, Yattendon and Hermitage.

Letcombe - Lambourn - Hungerford

A Hilly route heading out towards Brightwalton via East Isley. The route drops down Chain Hill before coming back up the ridgeeway via Fir Tree Climb. It's then a long descent into Labourn before climbing up and crossing the B4000. After the B4000 it's then the descent of Stag Hill and a flat run back into Newbury via Kintbury

Littlecote - Burbage - Hurstbourne Tarrant

A relatively flat route with one significant climb towards the end of the ride. Heading out to Hungerford via Kintbury. There is a short but steep climb past Littlecote before a nice flowing descent where it then crosses the A4 and heads to Burbage and Tidcombe. From Tidcome it's then a fast run down the beautiful Swift Valley to Saint Mary Bourne where the route then takes on a 7km climb to Crux Easton. The return to Newbury is via Woolton Hill and Enbourne.

NVCC Training Route

A training route sticking to main roads. Heading straight out on the B4000 to Foxhill, the route then turns back towards Aldbourne along a rolling road. There is a long drag out of Aldbourne before hitting the steep descent into Ogbourne St George. Once the route reaches Marlborough it is then a fast run back into Newbury with White Hill before Ramsbury being the only climb of note, though save something in the legs for the small climb up past Stockcross on the A4 at 48 miles.

Pangbourne - Compton - Brightwalton

Leaving Newbury up to Cold Ash via the climb of Stoney Lane. It's then along the top of the ridge to Chapel row then dropping down to Bradfield and heading onto Pangbourne. The route then climbs from Pangbourne up to Aldworth, it then drops down Apple Pie hill and heads on to East Isley where the route then climbs again. From Brightwalton it's then gradually downhill all the way back to Newbury via Boxford.

Sherborne - Mortimer - Bucklebury

A flat Macchiato route, leaving Newbury town centre via short climb the route then skirts Greenham common. There is a 2nd climb after Brimpton but then it is flat on some country lanes to Mortimer via Sherbourne St John, Bramley and Beech Hill. There is another small climb up to Mortimer but it's then flat again to Theale where it then climbs up the ridge. The route then drops down into Bucklbury where it follows the valley and climbs out of it to Hermitage. From there it is a gradual descent into Newbury.

Snelsmore Family Velo Quest May 2020

Stockcross - Inkpen - Wash Common

Heading out on the B4000 to Stockcross the route then drops down and crosses the Kennet canal at Marsh Benham and out to Inkpen via Kintbury. From Kintbury it is mainly downhill back into Newbury but punctuated by a few short inclines.

Stoke - Shalbourne - Hampstead Marshall

Heading out towards Highclere where the route then takes on a challenging climb up to Ashmansworth, it then dropps down to Stoke in the Test Valley. The next 15km very gently rises up to Tidcombe, it's then up and over Rivar Hill, the descent into Shalbourne is steep. The road back into Newbury undulates through the villages of Ham, Inkpen and Hampsted Marshall.

The Combe Horse Shoe

Uffington - Aldbourne - Stockcross

Heading towards Lambourn via the valley road and then onto the Downs to the top of Blowing Stone (see Wikipedia for historical interest), where there is a steep descent off the ridge (take care as immediately at the bottom of the descent there is a cross-roads). The road then follows the bottom of the ridge to Bishopstone via Ashbury, there is also the option of taking a detour off the main road up White Horse / Dragon Hill. There is a 1.5km / 1 mile climb out of Bishopstone and a second steeper climb after Aldbourne of just over 2km / 1.25miles. It's then back on the B4000 to Newbury.

Uffington White Horse

A Hilly route firstly heading constantly upwards towards Farnborough before dropping down Chain Hill. The route the climbs out of Childrey up Fir Tree Hill and winds it's way towards mini alpine-esc climb of Uffington White Horse. The route then climbs Ashbury Hill and then climbs again coming out of Lambourn. The route reaches the B4000 for a fast run gradual descent back into Newbury.

Upper Bucklebury - Hampstead Norreys - Boxford

Walbury - Ashmansworth

A good introduction to the hills to the south of Newbury. From Inkpen, the route takes in the course of the Newbury Velo Hill Climb and continues on to Faccombe before a sharp descent and long drap up to Ashmansworth. After that it’s a long descent to Highclere and back intoNewbury via Penwood.

Walbury and The Chutes

A route with significant flat sections but punctuated by some of the tougher climbs in the area. The route gradually climbs out of Newbury towards Inkpen and the onto the top of Walbury Hill, the highest point in Southern-East England. The route continues to climb to Faccombe, drops down to Hurstbournt Tarrant and then up the valley towards the next climb of Conholt. Heading across the scenic Chutes causeway and then over towards Chilton Foliat and Stag Hill. The route heads back into Newbury via the valley road.

Watership Down - Baughurst - Upper Bucklebury

Heading out of Newbury via Wash Common the route then goes through Great Penwood which is lined by rhododendrons which spectaucarly flower late May/June. Heading onto Symington there is then the steep climb of Watership Down before a gradual 5km / 3 mile descent. Once the main road is reached the route it's a 5km uphill drag followed by a short downhill before and then a steeper climb up to Hannington. The route is then fairly flat back to Newbury via Ramsdell, Brimpton and Chapel Row.

Watership Down - Chutes Causeway - Coombe

A Hilly route. Heading out via Burghclere before reaching the first steep climb of Watership Down, once over this you are rewarded by a 3.5mile gradual descent. Once out on the main road be prepared for the tough little kicker coming out of Cole Henry! The route then climbs over the Chutes and the back of Coombe before heading back into Newbury.

West Berkshire

An epic route that skirts the outline of West Berkshire

West Woodhay - Wickham

An undulating route heading out via the B4000 to Stockcross. The route climbs very gradually to West Woodhay before dropping down to Kintbury and then reaching the second gradual climb to Wickham. It's then back into Newbury via the Valley road.

White Roads Classic

A local sportive route which is based on the Italian Classic one day race; Strade Bianche (White Roads). There are around 30km of white chalk tracks split into 14 "sectors" across the route which traverses the ridgeway, the oldest road in the UK. There are a few interesting Neolithic and Iron Age sites dotted along the route. The White Roads route is demanding if ridden on a Cross and Gravel bike, though for a super-hard challenge it could be attempted on a road bike.

Winterbourne - Kintbury - Enborne

Heading out of Newbury via the quiet Winterbourne valley road. There are 3 challenging small peaks between Winterbourne and Boxford. The route then climbs from Welford to Wickham before dropping down over the A4 to Kintbury. It is then a rolling route back into Newbury.

Woodcote - Burghfield - Greenham
